Well, obviously, I have finished Bill Mott and Royal Delta! Bad blogger!!!

I figured I would just post the rest of the progression and then move on! The last photo is a pic of how I use my iPad for working. I found a great armature on line for less than $75.00 that has been wonderful. Sometimes the glare on the iPad bothers me, mostly when working on dark subjects. The arm does swivel so I can position it for the least amount of glare. But I have also gone back to using photos for working on faces. And I do love being able to blow up portions of the photo to get the details. I also installed photoshop on my iPad so manipulation of color and light/dark is easy without having to run back to my desktop. I have seen a few artists online that have mounted a spare monitor to the wall close to their easel that looks great... I would have to rearrange my studio to utilize the one small wall to do the mounting... I have floor to ceiling glass windows on 3 sides of the studio, which I adore for the light and view of the outside world... but not great for mounting monitors! The other wall has french doors and a stone wall from the fireplace.... there is about 5 feet of wall in between! But something to think about!

Sorry I have been away for so long... been a trying year! Besides my mother being in long term nursing care here, I was in a car accident which totaled my car... Not hurt, but banged up and shook up! Had to deal with insurance companies and getting a new car.... :/ And my husband is planning on retirement in October! Sort of dreading that! Its like D-day!! Invasion of the husband! I work out of the home and it is going to be very interesting when that happens! I maybe on here venting soon!

Her are a few more WIP's of Royal and Bill. Plus a detail of Bill's hand. A lot of emotion is in that pat of the hand… so it was important to get it right! And hands are hard!!! A man's arm was kind of interesting to do too... to show the hairs on his arm without making it look dirty. I am so pleased with the way it came out! One of the tricks I tell young artists about doing something a little different for them, is to "do what you see, not what you know". That especially goes for colors. If you have trouble figuring out a color, it is sometimes helpful to get a neutral gray card. Cut a small window in it. Then you can hold it up to your picture to help you identify the color.. without being influenced by what is around it. Oh and my other favorite tip... "less is more"… keep it simple so you do not draw attention it an awkward area.

Even though I have not been posting, I have been working... so I have a lot of work to share! This is the companion piece to "Royal Delta". Bill Mott was Royal's trainer. Bill is an amazing trainer and is in the racing hall of fame. He has trained MANY horses. But Royal Delta was special… not only was she a phenomenal athlete, but she is a wonderful horse. The reference photo was taken by a talented photographer (Pat Hammel) who works for Bill. It was taken on the day she shipped out for retirement after a spectacular racing career. A very emotional day. The original shot is full body…. I opted to crop. I wanted to capture the sentiment of the event and the full body shot just was more info than was necessary.

I decided to go with a blue back ground rather than the pinkish one on Royal's portrait… just did not think Bill would look that good in pink!!

O.K…… I have been a bad poster!!! Between the holidays, work and Mom…. need I say more! But on top of that I bit the bullet and added a new puppy to the family! We have been a one dog family for over a year now… for the last 30 years we have always had 2 dogs. I saw a really cute puppy that my dog rescue friends had online and thought I would take the leap! My other dog is 9 and starting to have some arthritis issues and I think he is just kind of lonely. If I had waited much longer, a puppy would have been too hard on him. The puppy, Tucker, has been great and Remi loves him!!! He is pretty smart and is already house broke!… mostly! My first heinz 57 ever! Grew up with Cocker Spaniels and as an adult we have had a Weimaraner and 4 German Shorthaired Pointers. Tucker's mom was a brown/tan sheltie/shepherd cross and the father is unknown. He is black and white and initially looked like he had some border collie in him… now that he is here he looks more like a b&w Newfoundland but with shorter ears!!! Anyway you look at him, he is cute!! There is a poll on how big he is going to be!! His mom was only about 25 lbs… so I don't think we are going to be HUGE…. He is 18lbs now… at about 13 weeks!

This is a quickie gouache I did of him so I could make a thank you card for Danny and Ron's Rescue… here is what I came up with for the card. Would still like to play around with the copy a bit… but for now, I am pleased!
Almost there…. sorry for the delay in getting this up. I have been on a trip through the Carolinas… part business, part family. I had 6 photo shoots in the Charlotte, N.C., area. And I wanted to check out a new horse show facility in Tryon, N.C…. the Tyron International Equine Center. I have been hearing a lot of amazing comments on the show facilities and wanted to check out the show grounds and speak to them about displaying my work there next spring. Well, it was amazing! Money is being poured into this 1400 acre horse resort. It is very well thought out and planned. However they were not very receptive to allowing individual artists to set up at this time. The venders area is a little on the small side for a facility this large. There are plans to expand this in the future. They do have a local gallery on site, Skyuka Fine Arts, and it just so happens to be one I had exhibited my work in last spring. I had planned to stop in and say hello on this trip… Had a great visit and one thing lead to another and… they are now going to represent my pastel portraits!! The owners husband ( Richard C. Nelson) does amazing oil portraits and is with Portraits Inc., a national portrait agency. My oils do not light a candle to his! But he is not an equine artist… he will do them but prefers to do the big oil portraits…. so there is an opening for me!!! This is the first gallery to represent me! I have never found one that was the right fit and this one feels right. I am very excited about the future partnership! We have already talked prices and they are basically doubling! Of course a large part of that is their commission. But they will be doing all the work to get the commissions and they are going to be on the show grounds for the whole show circuit. I will be doing a portrait for them to display after the first of the year. I also have a few ideas for some gallery pieces! Very excited for 2015!!!Debi Fitzgeraldhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/10173050403996869710noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8142608755960559730.post-65537387573672264222014-08-25T10:10:00.000-04:002014-08-25T10:10:15.000-04:00Royal Delta #4 WIP

Here is the 4th installment… finished her body and worked right into her head. I am really happy with the way the colors worked out on Royal's body! It is sometimes hard to get those really rich dark colors. And then that pop of blue in the sheen. Here is where I end up collecting lots of pastels… some companies just have better dark colors… Girault is my favorite for having nice dark purple/browns and red/browns. Unison also has some great dark colors but because the sticks are so short and fat it is hard to get a good sharp edge.

Moving right along…. I need to get the body done before I can move onto the head. I just find it easier to work left to right... because I am right-handed. And back to front…. because it is easier to lay color down on top of another color than to butt it right up against it. Some times I change that when I am working with a lot of white… like to do the white and other very light colors last to keep it as clean as I can. Of course here I will have to go back and rework the background… but at least I have that initial nice and clean edge. I generally go back and rework all my backgrounds before I am done.
I am doing the background a light pinkish grey… only because the client had seen one of my older pieces that was on the suede mat board and really liked it. So I am attempting to recreate it… sort of! The background is blue in the upper left because of my lighting… day light bulb on left and above, and tungsten on the right. I will eventually replace the tungsten. I really like the way Royal's body is coming along…. took me a while though. But I love using the purples and blues for that slight highlight in the shadows. And it will really make her head pop off the paper.Debi Fitzgeraldhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/10173050403996869710noreply@blogger.com4tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8142608755960559730.post-6735112683302086662014-07-13T11:04:00.000-04:002014-07-13T11:06:54.162-04:00Royal Delta WIP

This is a favorite portrait I did of a thoroughbred race horse named Royal Delta. It was commissioned by the bloodstock agent for the owner. She is pretty famous and her earnings on the race track are over 4 million! She was trained by Hall of Fame trainer, Bill Mott…. great trainer and good guy!… not so many in this business! He loves this horse… and not just because she won a lot of races. I have been told that she has the air of greatness about her and is a nice horse to be around. She retired the end of last year and was shipped to Ireland to be bred to a horse named Galileo. Bill sent a case of peppermints with her… she only likes one specific brand! This photo was taken by Pat Hammel who works for Bill. She is a wonderful photographer and I am honored that she allowed me to do this pastel of her work.
So sorry I have been away for so long! Life with my mom has been quite the roller coaster! She arrived right after my last post in February! Since than I have moved her 3 times (different rooms in the same facility) Started in the memory care section because of her dementia… they wanted to make sure she was not going to wander off. Thought it was going to be alright and moved her to the general population… that lasted less than a week before she was found wandering in the parking lot! Back to memory care! A month ago they thought she was having either a stroke or heart attack… sent her to the hospital… turns out she had an obstructed bowel! Three weeks of basically being bedridden, we are now in rehab! O.K. TMI! Between keeping up with her and just doing my work, something had to give! Sorry bout that! She is doing alright in rehab but I am afraid this is the calm before the storm! It is just so sad to see your parents fading away! She recognizes me, but does not know who I am. She lives in the moment, which is good for her, but sad for me. And also hard for her care givers, nurses and doctors. And she just does not have the will to get better…. so very sad! I thought I would blog about the experience… but it is just so depressing that I could not make myself rehash everything here. My work, when I can do it has been my retreat from it all. I also have taken up guitar again after 20 years or so! I always found playing to be therapeutic. Need all I can get right now! And I have lots of work that needs to get posted here!! Some really wonderful pieces too! So… stay tuned! And thanks for listening if I ramble on a bit about life with an elderly parent! And I must add… my dad on the other hand has been in Africa on a safari for the last few weeks! Total polar opposite!
We are in the process of moving my mother down here to Florida close to me. She has moderate dementia and just fell and broke her shoulder. You may also notice that when doing this drawing I tried to mark some of the white in this horses dapples. He is a really beautiful animal… but those dapples are going to drive me to drink!! My friend Bob, who owned this horse at the time, mentioned to me that he had a special horse he wanted done while I was at this horse show in Va.. While visiting with a friend under the main tent, we saw this magnificent dappled gray horse coming up to the ring. We could not see the rider because of the other tents. My friend commented that I should take a photo and just do a pastel of it… I of course said "NO WAY! All those dapples will drive me crazy!" And then it occurred to me that it might possibly be Bob's horse… sure enough! I walked out and there was Bob sitting on top!! The only thing harder than a gray dappled horse is a bay dappled horse… you have to be much more subtle with the bay to get that richness.
Debi Fitzgeraldhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/10173050403996869710noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8142608755960559730.post-20036655308450228362013-11-30T19:04:00.001-05:002013-11-30T19:04:21.912-05:00Casallo with Hazzy & Blanche #1

Casallo with Hazzy & Blanche #1, originally uploaded by debifitz.

Here is my next progression… I took the photos in Virginia while at a horse show in july… it was 104 degrees in the shade!!!! I was so surprised to get any decent photos. Everyone (I mean everyone!… canine, equine and human!) was panting. I did not even want to take photos!! I managed to get these guys though. The portrait was commissioned by a friend. He did not want the horse show grounds for the BG. But did want it to look like the hills in Va. This BG is actually from the Tryon, N.C. area… close enough!! Love doing the purple/blue hills!! I have used this exact BG in 2 previous portraits… I guess it is one of my favorites!!
Debi Fitzgeraldhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/10173050403996869710noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8142608755960559730.post-12024412750003568302013-11-21T09:19:00.001-05:002013-11-21T09:25:43.133-05:00Danny and Ron's Rescue calendar cover 2014

I have been playing catch up with my work lately… jumping from one piece right into another… my only excuse for not posting! But that also means I have a bunch to put on here!

But first I want to share the 2014 calendar cover for Danny and Ron's Rescue. I do this for them every year. They are wonderful people and great friends! I believe this is the 5th cover I have had the privilege of creating for their cause. To date they have found forever homes for over 5300 dogs! I have also completed a christmas card for them. But they have decided to wait until next year to market it. It is my first Christmas card attempt and it was lots of fun! I will be very curious to see how it does. A lot of their big donors had already purchased their cards for this year… so they opted to wait. They are also going to sell it by the box of 10 at their horse shows. I will post it here next!!

This cover is from their little pontoon boat that they have down in Wellington, Fl. And as usual, I packed it with their dogs and a few visitors. I took the photos on the lake behind their house last april… always a good time!

If you would like to purchase a calendar, go to their web site…

dannyandronsrescue.com

They are $25 each or 4 for $80 each… they make a great stocking stuffer… the months high light dogs that have found their forever homes because of them!Debi Fitzgeraldhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/10173050403996869710noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8142608755960559730.post-70806662045499570072013-11-05T11:27:00.001-05:002013-11-05T11:27:48.715-05:00Petey

Petey, originally uploaded by debifitz.

Petey Done!…. sorry for being such a bad blogger! Went to a big family wedding and have been off track ever since. Picked up a couple of commissions along the way…always a good thing! And now trying to get back into my routine… although I can not seem to remember what that was!! I was busy working on the calendar cover for Danny and Ron's Rescue before the trip. And I also did a Christmas card for them this year and a logo for the humane society that they work out of in Camden,S.C.. BUSY! Although they are going to hold off the Christmas cards and promote it next year… a lot of their big donors had already ordered their Christmas cards for this year… so it was decided to save it for next year where they will have more time to market it properly… I will post them here though!!.. next blog!
Debi Fitzgeraldhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/10173050403996869710noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8142608755960559730.post-14748182436975093602013-09-27T10:53:00.001-04:002013-09-27T10:53:25.651-04:00Petey #6

Petey #6, originally uploaded by debifitz.

Just about there....
Debi Fitzgeraldhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/10173050403996869710noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8142608755960559730.post-64125618454640188662013-09-22T10:17:00.001-04:002013-09-22T16:03:26.804-04:00Petey #5

Working left to right... top to bottom. Usually I do this pose vertically, but the client wants it for a space over her fire place where a vertical will not fit. This background however becomes a subject in itself and makes up for it! I have been taking my time with it because the client is extremely particular about everything!! Do not want it coming back for touch ups!

I have also been working on the 2014 calendar cover for Danny and Ron's Rescue. The iPad and it's brilliant new Spider Arm has come in quite handy. I took some photos of it in action.... I can't show the calendar cover until the first of Oct... when it comes out! But you get a little sneak peek here! Also a glimpse into my studio...
Sorry I have not been on in a while... I just acquired an iPad!!! Been pining for one for a while now... to use in art work of course!! NO really! I have seen that a lot of artist are using them in place of photos for reference. I have started having issues with the co that does my printing. The photos always come out darker than what I am uploading from my computer. And my home printer's color is off. Not to mention, I was seeing the possibilities of using the iPad on the road as a portfolio and to show clients the photos that I take. I have a lap top that I have been using for a while now and I am worried about it dying on me. This way I have a back up for that also. But every time I save a few pennies, something comes up and empties the piggy bank! Well... Danny and Ron's Rescue to the rescue!! I got the most wonderful care package from them in the mail the end of last week.... an iPad 4!!! So I have been playing around with it all week. And I have started using it on their 2014 calendar cover that I am working on at the moment. I ordered an iPad armature for my work space... so that I do not have to hold it while I work. Got that yesterday and it is working beautifully! You should have seen what I rigged up while waiting for it to arrive!! I will post a pic of the new set up soon! Still getting used to the retina display instead of a photo. I will probably use both. But it is great for getting close ups for detail like hands and feet!

Back to Petey!! I do love the way this bg has turned out! In reality, the horse could not be standing on flat ground... there is a steep hill going up to the client's barn and home. The client asked me to make it more realistic by changing the perspective of the ponds and fencing. That would have bunched them all up in the bottom third of the portrait. But compositionally, I like the way the fencing and ponds break up the piece horizontally. Petey and the pine tree are such strong vertical elements. And then I love the diagonal lines from the tree shadows soften it all. I think this is one of my best back grounds!
